Walking Warriors Conquer Snowdon

11 members of the ResourceBank Telford Office successfully conquered the  “Snowdon Challenge” on Saturday 13th June and have raised nearly £1500 on behalf of the Telford and Wrekin CVS, a charity supporting the local community.RBRWW

The team lived up to their nickname the “Walking Warriors” as they battled through the weather to walk up and down the largest mountain in England & Wales in a very respectable 5 hours 40 minutes.

Prior to the challenge the team had undertaken some training around Shropshire peaks including the Wrekin, Long Mynd, Caer Caradoc and were driven on by the reminder that it was all in a good cause (Telford and Wrekin CVS  runs local community services including the Telford Carers Centre).

Ellie Peters, Project Assistant at ResourceBank takes up the tale:

“The team set off for Snowdonia straight from work Friday evening to stay overnight in a local Youth Hostel (some of us were pushing the boundaries on the definition of a Youth!!) ready for an early start at the foot of the mountain the following morning.  The weather report of thunderstorms filled us with dread, but we were all putting on a brave face!!Mountainselfie

We set off at 7.40am will smiles on our faces and a spring in our step…we dropped the smiles pretty rapidly and replaced them with grimaces and loud sounds of wheezing, puffing and panting!!  This was NOT the Wrekin!  Once the initial shock of just how tough this was going to be (apart from Alex, who never broke a sweat all the way up!!) we got into a rhythm, dug deep and soldiered on.

In just under 3 hours we were triumphant and made it to Snowdon’s Summit – along with 4 million midges!!  We were up there long enough to get the “We Did It!!” picture and then we all hotfooted it back down to escape being bitten beyond belief.

Our timing couldn’t have been more perfect – not half an hour after our summit picture was taken, the weather closed in and the rest of the mountain walkers were surrounded by wet cloud.

Coming back down, via the Miners Track, we were all able to talk to each other more (strange that!) and the ‘Mountain Banter’ consisted of “OMG this is steep even going down / thank God we’re not these people on the way up (being very smug Tee Hee)”.  The scenery was stunning and as we weren’t all concerned about just breathing to stay alive, we were able to take the time to appreciate its natural beauty.

We are all very proud of ourselves and would like to thank you everyone that sponsored us, we are all very grateful for your generosity.  The Virgin Money Giving Page is still open for another week if anyone would like to help us get our total up even further:”

With Snowdon conquered, the team have started to raise their sights – and there is talk about Ben Nevis in 2016…. well done the ResourceBank Walking Warriors!
