The problems with high volume recruitment

Hiring new people is a complex process in itself, and when met with high volume recruitment you can be presented with even more challenges, usually within a short space of time! If you’re not prepared for this, it can affect the quality of people joining your business which in turn may create more problems further down the line.

There are a number of reasons you might be faced with high volume recruitment. Rapid business growth, seasonal hiring, the opening of a new office / depot, apprentice or graduate recruitment – the list goes on.

So what are the main issues and how can they be overcome?

  • Managing applicants – High volume recruitment means high volumes of CVs to sift, lots of people to speak to and interviews to arrange. Having a great Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is key. Does yours have the capability to track the progress of each candidate from application right through to onboarding? Can it automate parts of the process to save you time or help with parsing CVs and pre-screening? Spend time to research different tools and software to see what would fit your needs, or you could outsource your roles to someone that already has an amazing ATS to do the work for you.


  • The application process – Have you ever tried to apply for one of your own positions to see what the candidate sees? There are all sorts of things that can put candidate off applying. Is there a lengthy application form? Can they apply from their mobile phone? How easy is it to upload their CV? Do they need a CV? The longer or more difficult a process, the less likely a candidate is to express their interest in a role. When hiring in volume, you need to make everything as simple and streamlined as possible to attract the number of people you need.
  • Staying ahead of the competition – If your hourly rates or annual salaries aren’t competitive you will lose candidates, especially with the job market currently so saturated with available vacancies, it’s more important than ever. The offer of more money will nearly always lure people away to take the highest offer. If you’re unable to compete with other salaries, promote your brand instead. Why is your company a great place to work? What else can you offer people?


  • Quantity versus quality – When the pressure is on to fill roles as quickly as possible, it often results in bypassing the quality of candidate to get ‘bums on seats’. To avoid this, you may need to look at additional support within your recruitment team or look at utilising a company on a temporary basis to help manage your recruitment project to ensure you’re hiring the right people for the right reasons.
