Flexible recruitment solution fills 250 key roles in 3 months


SSP UK are the leading operator of restaurants, bars, cafes, food courts, and retail stores in airports, train stations, motorway service areas and leisure locations.

After suffering a reduction of commuter and commercial travel due to COVID-19, SSP rapidly needed to re-open and re-build ahead of their busiest time of the year between April and September 2022. Even though they had an established and effective internal recruitment team, this volume of recruitment within such a short timescale placed a huge strain on their resources. SSP looked for a solution that would give them immediate support at a high-volume level from a supplier that understood the travel, retail, and hospitality sectors.

Because ResourceBank has a great track record in the sector and as we offered a range of flexible models that SSP could access as required, we were selected to provide a flexible top-up outsourced recruitment service.

How we responded

We were able to “hit the ground running” and quickly established a team of four dedicated and experienced recruiters to focus solely on the recruitment for SSP. We implemented a comprehensive advertising and sourcing campaign for 100 immediate vacancies for brands such as M&S Food, Starbucks, Millie’s Cookies and Uppercrust. Because of the speed required and the level of applications received, the team was expanded to over 10 members and worked evenings and weekends to deliver on the volumes needed to support SSP’s expansion.

The results

Over the course of the three-month project, we have offered 251 people roles with SSP, with over 200 confirmed starters to date. We achieved a one in two ratio of candidates put forward for interview being offered a position and responded individually to over 3,000 applications and interviewed 1161 candidates.

We have been able to scale up, and down as quickly as needed to reflect the client needs as well as provide the flexibility in hours to mirror their internal teams and needs through evening and weekend work. Close working relationships were formed directly with the relevant Operations Managers to progress candidates quickly and effectively.  Robin Thompson, Operations Manager said;
